Taking that first step…
towards self care can be intimidating, exhilarating, as swirling thoughts and beliefs can get stirred up. Deep down you may know what to do, so what’s stopping you or what keeps you being consistent? These are the deeper questions we’ll be exploring here.
Before you can even begin creating a self care plan, grounding yourself first is key.
What is grounding?
Grounding is being here in the moment without distraction so you can fully embody being in your body. In contrast, not being here is being “too much” of; thinking, day dreaming, watching tv, surfing the web, texting, emailing, using a substance such as alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, sugar, etc. All these activities take you what I call “up and out”. Your soul is pushed aside and you are not present.
What I know for sure in my healing practice is that in order to heal and live fully, you must be present.
If this idea feels scary to you, then this is a message from your soul that there is a desire to heal something within you and the promise of freedom follows.
An easy way to get grounded is to get your bare feet on the earth. If you are feeling anxious or worried, take your shoes off and place your soles on the ground. This action connects you to the earth, and she will hold you from her very core.
“I regularly walk barefoot on the Earth, knowing that the Earth emits an electromagnetic field that is healing for me.” Dr. Christiane Northrup
Another way to become grounded if you’re indoors is to imagine small roots growing out from of the center of the bottom of your feet. Then, imagine pushing those roots deep within the cool earth until they find an anchor such as a boulder or another tree root. You can do this visualization anywhere, without anyone else being aware you are grounding. You can even imagine this when you are in a tall building! Gravity will pull you downward and the earth absorbs whatever you cannot carry.
This next week, simply notice if you are grounded and when you are not. Get yourself outside more and enjoy the summer weather. Take notes on what shows up when you are quiet and grounded. These are messages, from your soul.
